Admission Process at Foxwood Academy

Foxwood Academy accepts students throughout the school year, although most are admitted at the start of the academic year. Before admission, a thorough consultation with the Academy and various professionals ensures that the Academy can meet the needs outlined in the student's Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). After this consultation, it is the Local Authority's responsibility to decide if a place should be offered. Foxwood Academy does not maintain a waiting list and does not select students based on age or location. Foxwood Academy takes a maximum of 112 children and young people with SEND, this works out as approximately 30 in our primary classrooms, 32 in our key stage 3 classrooms and 50 in 14-19

Visiting Foxwood Academy - Prospective parents are encouraged to visit the Academy to talk with staff, meet current students, and discuss the specific needs of their child. To arrange a visit, please contact the Academy administration team at 0115 9177202. During this call, you will be asked for information about your child's needs, current educational provision, and future aspirations. Additionally, we recommend taking the narrated virtual tour available on our website.

Age and Admission - The age at which children are admitted varies according to their individual needs. Admission arrangements are tailored on a case-by-case basis in negotiation with other professionals, the relevant Local Authority, and agreed upon with parents. We believe that a strong partnership with parents is crucial to the success of the education we provide. Most children join us when they transition from one key stage to another but this is not statutory.

Admissions Management - All admissions to Foxwood Academy are managed through Nottinghamshire County Council. If you wish to apply for a place at Foxwood Academy, contact Nottinghamshire County Council at County Hall on 0115 8041275. If parents wish to appeal a placement decision, they should contact the Local Authority Schools Admissions or visit Nottinghamshire County Council: Appeal a school admission decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the questions we are often asked by parents and carers. If you need further information, please contact us directly – we’re happy to help.

How many children do you have at Foxwood?
We currently have 112 pupils on roll.

What happens if there aren’t any spaces?
Places are allocated by the local authority. We do not hold waiting lists. Only a small number of places become available each year, usually when our Year 12 and Year 13 students leave.

My child has been held back a year in mainstream. What will this look like if they get a place at Foxwood?
In a special school, children join the year group that corresponds to their chronological age. Pupils are not expected to meet mainstream “age-related expectations”, and our curriculum is tailored to individual need. All pupils leave at 18, not 19.

Do you admit young people into Year 12 or ‘sixth form’?
It is unusual for us to admit new students into Year 12. However, if there is space, the local authority makes this decision.

Does the school look at in-year applications?
Yes. We receive consultations from the local authority throughout the year. If there is space in a class, the local authority may admit a child or young person at an appropriate time.

Do you have open days?
No, we run virtual tours during the week (usually a Friday afternoon) and can offer in-person tours at least once a half term. These also run on a Friday afternoon.

Right of appeal
If the Local Authority decides not to name Foxwood Academy in your child’s Education, Health and Care Plan, parents and carers have the right to appeal to the First‑tier Tribunal (Special Educational Needs and Disability). Full guidance and forms are available on GOV.UK.

In‑year consultations
Nottinghamshire County Council coordinates all in‑year SEND placements. Details and the application form are on the LA’s Changing school in‑year page.
